Today is Sunday.
i started the day with going to Fairprice to buy groceries. Then come back to do my laundry. Two hours thirty minutes later and with hands aching later, i've finally managed to hang all my clothes up to dry.
What take me so long, you may ask. i still couldn't get use to the fact that staying in a HDB flat means you have to put all your clothes on the pole and hang them outside to dry. Doing laundry has never been to tiring. i was trying to maneuver the heavy pole and worrying that i might drop it anytime.
One of the things to get used to.
Including the place i'm staying now. One day after we've moved in, my housemates and i took the wrong bus home. We were so used to the direction back to PGP that we just automatically hopped on the bus, without realising that our house is exactly at the opposite direction. It was only when we saw the familiar sight of NUS that the realisation suddenly dawned on us: we are no longer staying in school.
Yes, i've officially severe all ties with NUS. i've moved out, rent a house outside, gotten the result for my final semester, matric card got deactivated... the only thing left would be my commencement less than two weeks later.
Third week into work and i'm only starting to get a taste of the busy life of an editor. To date, i have seven book projects and one journal. It took sometime to learn the jargons, get used to the system, the whole process, and to associate faces and names to the people in charge of the different stages/department.
It's all about deadlines. My journal is due for June issue and i haven't even finalise it, not to mention send it for printing. By the time they ship it to overseas, it'll be the July issue. Like what my colleague remarked, i'm so dead. i can't help it when i got the project halfway and it took me some time to learn the rope. i hope the big boss won't be upset. Sigh. The only highlight of these three weeks is probably that i've sent my first batch my copyedited manuscript for typesetting. But then, my second and third batch is due next week and i haven't even gone through half of them.
There are so many things to learn, so many things to do, so many things on pending and so many deadlines. i need to multi-task, divide my time wisely and speed things up. But i'm still reading like a tortoise especially when there are so many alien terminology. Sometimes i'm not even sure of the tenses and sentence structure. No wonder they called it OJT On-the-Job-Training. You're suppose to learn it while on the job, as time goes by. As for now, i'm just groping in the dark, trying to find my way.
Going to work, moving to a new place and getting used to the lifestyle, everything seems new to me. Sometimes i feel like a fish out of water. Out of my comfort zone, no longer an undergraduate, no longer staying in hostel but out, to the world.
i just need to get my bearings, find my own groove, and develop my own niche. With time, i'm confident i will find my way again.
